About this Event

Fitness! Fun! Philanthropy! Melissa's Race to Battle Brain Cancer is a fun, challenging, and certified chip-timed 5K run and walk, located at Fort Mellon Park on the scenic shore of Lake Monroe in Sanford. This event is in memory of Melissa Vosburg, a resident of Sanford and teacher at Midway Elementary School, who was lost to brain cancer in 2013. This event is dedicated to continuing her dream: her race. Proceeds benefit FLORIDA HOSPITAL CANCER INSTITUTE for brain cancer research.

5K Run/Walk - $35 through April 27, 2017 - $40 Day of Race
Virtual Run - $35 through April 27, 2017

Virtually anyone, of any fitness levels, can comfortably walk a 5k in under an hour!

You may still walk up at pre-event packet pick up to register on Friday April 28, 2017, or day of event starting at 6:30am.

Packet Pickup:
Pre Race Packet Pick Up will be held on Friday April 28, 2017 at Fleet Feet, located in the Renaissance Center Mall, 303 Altamonte Springs Dr, # 1140, Altamonte Springs FL 32701.....407 772-2233, open from 10am until 7 pm.  Race day pick up will open at 6:30am. Please arrive early to avoid long lines.

To create a team, sign yourself up and choose "Create a Team" when asked. You can also create your team as a fundraising team by choosing "Yes" when asked.

To join a team, sign yourself up and choose "Join a Team" when asked. Choose the team you wish to join from the drop down list.
Awards and Timing:
Among those choosing to be timed in the 5k, the top adult male and female and top age group winners will be presented with awards.

16 & under, 17-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+

Only the first place winner in each age group (male and female) will receive an award, not top 3. As this event is a fundraising event, we have to keep our costs low and cannot do as many running awards.   All 5K participants will have a timing chip on their bib and will be able to view and print your finish time and overall results in the Timing Tent.


All pre-registration participants will receive a 3 inch finishers medal if registered by midnight April 19, 2017. A limited number of finishers medals may be available after April 19, 2017, but cannot be guaranteed.

The purpose of our charity is to raise awareness of brain cancer, to fund research of brain cancer treatments, as well as to encourage and support innovations in primary education.  Melissa Vosburg, Inc is a US 501(c)3 charitable organization, so all donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Melissa's goal was to become the "Susan G. Komen of brain cancer.   For more information see

We can always use volunteers and will provide the training and instruction to make it easy on you.  Runners and Walkers can also volunteer as some duties occur before or after the race.  Or you can only volunteer!  Need service hours for your school or organization?  We can do that!  Not able to make it on race day?  No problem, see our Pre-Race Day duties!   

Examples of duties are setup, registration table, water table and course marshal.
